I love finding easy ways to make things that we eat or use every day, like my laundry detergent and yogurt. Well, now I found a solution for making real vanilla extract without paying the ridiculous grocery-store prices.

And it is EASY. I promise. You will be surprised like I was.

There are a variety of methods for making it, but here is what I did. You’ll need:

-Two 1.75 liter bottles of vodka (doesn’t have to be high quality)

-21 vanilla beans (I bought mine through Amazon at a great price)

If you can believe it, you just need those two ingredients. Cut each bean in half and put them all in one of the bottles. Let the vanilla beans soak for 2-3 months in a cool dark place. Shake the bottle occasionally and if you’d like a stronger flavor, let it soak longer. And it is ready to use!

When you use about a 1/4 of the bottle with the beans, add more vodka from your second bottle. Just keep doing that and you will have vanilla for years!

There is a decent amount of cost in the beginning for the alcohol and beans, but it will last a long time and it is so much cheaper than store-bought vanilla. Here is a great website if you’d like more info on making your own.

Happy vanilla making!
