Family Mission Statement

Family Mission Statement

I was listening to an episode of the Nestled Podcast, and their guest was Wynne Elder who is an adoptive mama and such a great encourager. She was talking about how she and her husband are intentional about creating mission statements for their family, and it got me thinking.

I was so inspired by her words about intentionality, so I contacted her to see if I could create a mission statement sign for her family. And these signs are now available for you to order as well here! You can personalize it with your family's own unique words that will be a reminder of your priorities and values.

Freshened Front Porch

Freshened Front Porch

We have a small, narrow front porch that was needing some love, so last week I decided to tackle the space with some paint to freshen it up. The ceiling and concrete floor were dark brown, so I painted the ceiling white and the floor light gray. That made it look so much brighter!

front porch

Below is what it looked like when we saw the house for the first time. I painted the entire exterior white a few years ago, and you can read about it here. It was originally so dark and there was so much brown. The windows especially looked like dark holes, so it made a huge difference when I painted everything white.

And here's what it looks like today...

I painted the door a blue color by Olympic called Navy Seawall, then painted the house numbers on the door with white outdoor craft paint. I would love to someday replace the door with an antique door, but for now it's fine.

I made the cotton stem wreath, and you can read the tutorial here

I wanted to get a plant to put on the front porch, but I'm trying to make do with what I have, so I cut some branches from one of our pear trees and put them into a vase with water, then put the vase in the basket.

The family sign is available here. I love it on the front porch.

My dad made some window boxes for the windows in the front of the house, and I love how they turned out! I filled them with a variety of green plants that do well in the shade.

Send us your wood!

Send us your wood!

We are offering a service now where you can send us your pieces of wood or doors and we will turn them into a sign or clock for you! We love, love, love old wood, and I've gotten quite a few requests from people about using their own special piece of wood, so we decided to start offering this.

Here is a clock that we created recently from parts of a customer's old door. The door was special to her because it was in her parents' home while she was growing up.

DIY Chalkboard on a Budget

DIY Chalkboard on a Budget

.
I created a large chalkboard for our mudroom and thought I'd show you the process! It is fairly big at 2' x 4' and really was very simple and affordable to create. I spent about $25 on the materials. I wanted a chalkboard that had a thin frame and looked like a vintage school chalkboard.
.
I stopped by Lowes and roamed the aisles to see what I could find that would work to easily create it. I found MDF boards cut to 2'x4' and strips of 4' long pieces of pine, so that's what I used.
.
DIY Chalkboard Tutorial
.
Here are the materials I used:
.
:: 1 - MDF board from Lowes 2'x4' (1/2" thick)
:: 4 - strips of pine from Lowes 1.5"x4' (3/4" thick)
:: Minwax Early American stain
:: Rustoleum Chalk Board paint (black)
:: 2" trim nails
:: 2 sawtooth hangers
.
.
Steps:
.
1. Paint one side of the MDF board with two coats of chalk board paint. Choose the side that is the smoothest.
.
2. Cut two of the 4' strips of pine to fit against the smaller sides of the MDF board. The other two strips of pine will fit against the longer sides of the MDF.
.

3. Rub stain on the pine strips.
.
4. Fit the strips against the MDF and pre-drill holes (with a slightly smaller drill bit than the trim nails), then use the trim nails to attach the strips to the MDF board. You'll be able to see the trim nails, but they blend in well with the wood and I don't mind them showing. If you are intimidated by pre-drilling holes and using nails, you could try using Liquid Nails to attach the trim pieces, then clamp them together and let them dry.
.
5. Season the chalkboard by rubbing it with the edge of a piece of chalk. Then wipe it off with a cloth.
.
.
6. Attach the sawtooth hangers to the back of the chalkboard.

I love easy projects like this that create a big impact! I'm not comfortable using many power tools and this chalkboard really doesn't require much work to create. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments!

How to create a cozy reading corner

How to create a cozy reading corner

reading corner with chair and light

I created a cozy little reading corner in our family room and thought I'd show you some of the elements I used.

1. Lighting. I chose to hang a wall sconce that can plug into a wall outlet. I think lighting is so key for making a space feel cozy. I bought mine from Walmart, but it is currently out of stock. If you are using a light that needs to be hardwired, but you don't want to go to the trouble, here is a great trick to use. Here are some similar lights that I love:

2. A comfy chair. My chair is an old yard sale find that I covered with a slipcover that I made years ago, and the pouf is from Marshall's. Here are some affordable chair options that are similar:

3. Cozy pillows and throws. You can never have too many! Mine are both older, so I don't have links for them, but here are some similar ones:

Garden Ideas I Want To Try

Garden Ideas I Want To Try

The weather is FINALLY starting to warm up, and I'm itching to get out in my flower beds and start digging! We live on a few acres with a small greenhouse and lots of places for pretty flowers and vegetable gardens. It takes a lot of work, but working outside on a summer night is like therapy to me.
.
Here are some ideas that I'd like to incorporate this year...
.
:: Trellis With Ivy. I fell in love with this DIY, and I'd like to try it against the back of our house. We have a white stucco exterior, and I think it would look so pretty!
.
Gardening ideas
.
:: Potting Table. I'd love to put a potting table outside of my little greenhouse. I'm hoping to find one at a barn sale or garage sale this year.
.
Gardening ideas
.
:: Walking Paths. I'd like to create several walking paths in the backyard using flat rocks that we already have and creeping plants and moss.
.
Gardening ideas
.
:: DIY Branch Trellis. I may try this sweet DIY against the greenhouse walls. I'm obsessed with climbing ivy right now, and this would be a great way to incorporate it. My kids might even be able to make this for me.
.
Gardening ideas
.
:: Window Boxes. My dad made us wood window boxes last year for the front of our house, and I'm gathering ideas for the type of flowers to use in them. Last year I overcrowded them, and they didn't do well. I'm determined to do better this year.
.
Gardening ideas
.
:: Climbing Roses. I have three climbing roses, and I think I'm going to plant a few more this year. We have a lot of fences around our property, and they look so pretty climbing over them! They have been pretty easy for me to grow and don't require a lot of maintenance, which I love.
.
Gardening ideas
.
:: Outdoor String Lights. Lighting creates so much ambiance on a summer night, and I'd like to incorporate them much more than I have in the past.

It's such an honor to be a part of so many weddings!

This was a custom sign that we created for the couple to use for their engagement photos. Click here for info on custom signs.
